KLINGON D-7 HEAVY CRUISER FLEEING THE V'GER CLOUD
(STAR TREK: THE MOTION PICTURE)
The sight of three Klingon K't'inga D7-class cruisers fleeing (and ultimately being obliterated) was more than enough to ensure that the audience realized just what Kirk and the crew of the USS Enterprise was facing in Star Trek: The Motion Picture. That awe-inspiring "battle" still stays in my mind, the horrific beauty of the V'ger cloud, the brutal music, the thundering plasma projectiles, and the sheer ... panic ... on the faces of the Klingon crews.
Additionally, the background image is not a screencap from "Star Trek: The Motion Picture." I was able to make a texture-map in PhotoShop of the V'ger cloud, and apply it as a color, alpha, and glow channel to a semi-complex mulit-layered torus spline object, to create the V'ger model in Carrara. I hope to someday use it in an animation of the famous FX shot of the three K'tinga class cruisers approaching Vejur...
Lastly, this image has earned me a surprising acolade or two - it has on more than one occasion been mistaken for an image modelled and rendered in more expensive software packages, namely 3D Studio Max and Lightwave. Not bad for a $200 program, eh?
